How can I use generative AI tools to support me with writing my paper?
Before submitting, review the AI policies of the journal or publisher to ensure your use of AI tools is fully compliant. Policies can vary between publishers and may be updated, so always consult their most recent guidelines.
If you are publishing with Springer Nature: we know that authors are increasingly wanting to use AI to support their work. We believe in the opportunities provided by AI, but always emphasise that any use must be with a human in the loop. When using AI Springer Nature authors should follow several guidelines.

Maintain accountability
You must take full responsibility for your work. Authorship implies accountability, which can't be applied to Large Language Models. While AI can assist with wording and formatting, generative edits or autonomous content creation require human oversight.

Acknowledge the use of AI
Use of a Large Language Model or AI tool should be acknowledged in the Methods section of the manuscript, or a suitable alternative. However, “AI-assisted copy editing”, defined as improving readability, style, and correcting language errors does not need to be declared.

Avoid AI generated images or videos
Please be aware that we don’t permit the use of AI generated images or videos. Images and videos that are directly referenced in a piece that is specifically about AI will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
More detailed and up-to-date information on use can be found on springernature.com. You can also seek guidance from the journal or publisher you wish to publish with.
At Springer Nature we support responsible use of AI in research and have developed innovative tools, like Nature Research Assistant, to help optimise and streamline time-consuming research tasks.
